Last night I was pretty cozy in my apartment (rain inspires the same hibernating tendencies here) but decided I needed to at least go for a walk to see what, if anything, was going on for Halloween. I didn’t dress up or anything (which turned out to be a good thing). I just threw on a coat and headed out the door. When I walked outside I was a little shocked. It was SO dark (because of daylight savings time) and none of the street lights on the street perpendicular to mine where on.
I headed towards El Paseo but nothing was really going on. I expected to see at least a few kids trick or treating since we talked about it so much at school. I saw two teenagers dressed up, one lone jack-o-latern in a bar window and a couple pieces of candy on the ground. That was it. I strolled along the streets and finally ran into one group of kids trick or treating but that was it.
Halloween may be gaining popularity here, but it definitely has a ways to go before it can compete with the U.S.
I headed back home and chilled before my video-chat date with my family at 1am. My grandma’s birthday was yesterday and my grandpa, aunt, uncle, cousins, mom, dad, and sister were getting together at my aunt and uncle’s house for dinner. I video chatted with them for awhile and wished my grandma a happy birthday, but as soon as they realized what time it was here they let me go.
I slept in again today (yay for holiday weekends!). I got up, showered, made some lunch, continued rotating clothes on my towel warmer and worked on some flash cards for one of my adult classes.
I’m a little afraid as the weather gets colder that it will be harder to randomly run into people. When it’s sunny, and even a little bit when it’s raining I can go for a stroll and usually run into someone. In the winter people tend to hide out in their houses. I hope I’ve become good enough friends with people at that point that I can hide out in their houses with them.
I wasted a lot of time listening to music and surfing the web until I decided to go get some coffee. I headed to Mezquita and who was there??? Pepe, of course! Rocio also showed up shortly after I did. We chatted and had coffee and then they wanted to take me to another place. We walked not too far down the street to another bar/restaurant. There we had ‘mosto’ (like grape juice) and round after round of tapas. Oh my goodness. I’m so stuffed. We had croquetas, pancetta, pescado, pan, chorizo and more and more. I couldn’t tell which things they brought to us because we bought drinks (they include a free tapa when you buy a drink here) and which tapas they brought us because Pepe ordered them. Every time Pepe asked if I wanted more I would say, “No, no, that’s ok. That’s enough” which apparently to him was code for “Well, maybe ONE more.” It was all so good, but goodness…I really am full. When we were finally done I went on a little walk to try and let my food digest. I peeked into Mezquita because Gloria, Maria and the others had been there when Pepe bought me coffee earlier, but they had left by the time I got back…back home I headed.
On Friday at school I noticed that the white board in the teacher’s room had a substitute teacher schedule for Sebas. When I asked him about it he mentioned that he was going to Cordoba and Sevilla for the week. Well tonight when I was talking to Rocio she was talking about this trip. Apparently it’s a field trip for the 5th and 6th graders, and most of the students are going, but not everyone. I’m not sure what this means for my teaching this week. Part of me hopes I’m off the hook and don’t have to teach those 2 classes this week…if I do have to teach them I wish someone had told me that I needed to prepare a lesson by myself. Oh well…I guess either way we’ll figure something out. One of the difficult things about trying to prepare things with the other teachers is that they don’t really get to school early and they don’t stay after the end of the school day. During recess they are watching the kids on the playground and I don’t have time to talk to them about anything. I hope this planning gets easier as the weeks go by.
Tomorrow I am working with the 3 and 4 year olds. I haven’t gotten a chance to work with them because last week I had to go to Jaén to do paperwork. It should be quite the experience. How do you teach 3 and 4 year olds a second language?
As of tomorrow I will have been in Siles for 2 weeks. My time here is going to fly by, I just know it.
